JUST ONE THING

The greatest enemy of hunger for God is not poison but apple pie. It is not the banquet of the wicked that dulls our appetite for heaven, but endless nibbling at the table of the world. It is not the X-rated video, but the prime-time dribble of triviality we drink in every night… For when these replace an appetite for God Himself, the idolatry is scarcely recognizable, and almost incurable.

PsaLM 27:4 One [thing] I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.

JUST ONE THING! If only you can seek just that one thing! Satan used that forbidden tree in the Garden to draw away Adam and Eve’s attention from beholding the beauty of the Lord. The Devil knew that the more those two walked with God, the more they would love Him. When they really began to gaze upon His beauty, nothing in the Garden, or the whole world for that matter, would be as appealing, as satisfying, as beautiful as our Creator, Father God! Once people begin to eat of the fruit of relationship with the Lord, nothing else is as desirable as being with Him!

Psalm 34:8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD [is] good; Blessed [is] the man [who] trusts in Him.

King David, in our big orange verse above, discloses that he has a laser focus on the Lord! Everything else is out of focus. He brings all of his passion to bear on seeking to be close enough to God, to see His beauty and to hear the Lord’s voice above all other voices. David’s goal was to enjoy the Lord in close communion with Him all the days of his life!

So many in today’s world, are preoccupied, they are mesmerized by the passing trinkets dangling before their eyes like an infant that can take his / her eyes off the mobile above their head in the crib. Sadly, vast numbers of people satisfy themselves with the passing, eternally worthless things. The tragedy: they miss the treasure of the beauty of knowing and walking with God! The good news is that when a person’s number one desire is to behold the beauty of the Lord, that desire will always be satisfied and greatly rewarded! May that one thing be our whole heart’s desire!

Every blessing!
